The Old Codgers

Some of our original members formed their own little group to fish locally on the River Segura as conditions allowed them to, Not wanting to travel great distances as some of them have no room in their cars for tackle and Zimmer frames, they have fished very competitive yet friendly matches, They started their current series of matches, 17 in total in October 2007 and completed them in June 2008.

CARP R US MATCH RESULTS by Terry Screen
An Open Match was held on the 2nd October at Pedrera; with the sudden drop of temperatures at night this is putting the fish off the feed and keeping the weights low.
1st Den (The Stick) Pick fishing the feeder and pellets with 9.930kg. 2nd George (Victor Meldrew) Fogg fishing the whip and maggot for the Bleak with 5.300kg. 3rd Bob (Sergeant Major) Rafferty fishing the feeder and corn with 3.870kg.

Open Match

An Open Match was held on Thursday the 23^rd October at Murcia Town Centre on the River Segura, 12 anglers fished the match on what turned out to be a damp day, the fishing was hard going with the drop in temperature of the water caused by the recent heavy rains, Entertainment was provided by the University students party on the opposite bank, with a live band banging away all day?

1st on the day was Terry Screen with 5.840kg. 2nd was Peter Hutchison with 5.380kg. Joint 3rd with 4.860kg was Bob Wells and Paul Baxter

Evening Series 2008 First Round

The first round of the evening series was fished on the 15^th July 2008 at Murcia Town Centre on the River Segura, the venue was moved from the Embalse Pedrera due to the rain giving problems with access to the water, and from the match section on the Segura due to water levels.

Twelve anglers fished the match but someone omitted to let Bob Rafferty know the quarry was fish not wild fowl.

Fishing was slow, and with the wind blowing it made it difficult to fish the waggler.

The winner of the match was Stuart Thompson weighing in with 7.840kgs, second with 3.420 was Peter Hutchison and third was Terry Screen

Evening Series Third Round

The third round of the evening series was fished on the 5^th August 2008 at the Embalse Pedrera, fourteen anglers fished the match but only five anglers had fish to weigh in

The fish were very hard come by on this our third match of the evening series, the conditions seemed perfect but the fish were just not taking the baits offered, Terry Screen had taken one small Black Bass in three and a half hours and decided to try for Bleak next to the snaggy bushes in the water, which produced his net weight of 1.650kgs. bad look Terry, maybe if you had adopted these tactics earlier in the match you would have run out the winner instead of settling for fifth place.

First on the day was Bob Elms with 4.310kgs second was Bob Wells with 2.37kgs and third with 1,880kgs was Peter Hutchison.

The sixth round of the evening series was fished on Tuesday the 2^nd of September 2008 on the River Segura at Murcia town centre, thirteen anglers fished the match, but only ten anglers brought fish to the weigh net.

Fishing was hard going with a lot of muck still coming up off of the riverbed. also the broken cane and debris left by the workmen clearing the swims for the forthcoming federation match

Evening Series Seventh Round

The seventh round of the evening series was fished on Tuesday the 9^th of September 2008 at the Embalse Pedrera, seventeen anglers fished the match, and thirteen anglers brought fish to the weigh net.

Fishing was hard going in certain areas with the wind blowing creating large waves across the shallow waters. The match was fished on two different areas of the lake because of fitting that number of pegs in, these were Barbel Bay and the normal match section further round,.

The winner of the match again was new member Paul Baxter, (Well done Paul) weighing in with 7.340kgs, second with 7.140kgs was Bob Wells and third was George Fogg with 4.280kgs

Evening Series Eighth and Final Round

The 8th and final round of the Evening Series was fished on the River Segura at Murcia on the 16th September.
The scum on the water was back again, despite being drained off for the big Spanish Match, The wind was moving it about from one peg to the other, making fishing difficult and weights were poor.
1st place was Paul (poco loco) Baxter making it 3 in a row with 2.690kg fishing the pole on maggot and corn, Well Done!! 2nd Stuart (Flying Officer) Thompson with 2.011kg 3rd Terry (Swing em) Screen with 1.350kg and both were fishing similar methods to the winner

The Barbara Wookey Charity Match 2008 was fished at Argos on Thursday the 10^th July 2008.

16 Anglers turned out to fish the Barbara Wookey Charity Match on what was a very hot day

Catches were still down on those being taken at this time last year, the fact that this venue is now being fished three times a week by local Costa Blanca Clubs and sometimes by the Murcia Federation Clubs I’m sure has a large bearing on these results, plus the fact that a lot of fish are being taken for the table every week.

Knock Out Final 2008

The Final of the knockout series consisting of the 1^st and 2^nd placed anglers from the four preliminary rounds was fished at Embalse Pedrera on Thursday the 31^st of July.

Once again Terry Screen waving his magic wand, or should I say pole, managed to coax the greatest weight from the waters using hemp and soft pellet, in second place was Barry Homer and a very closely contested third place was taken by Peter Hutchison.

After the summer series of matches and the pairs competition, the first match of the Knockout series was fished on the 3rd July 2008.

After a quick meeting on the bank the Venue was changed from the River Segura at Benijofar, to the Embalse Pedrera, when it was found the river level had dropped a foot over night, making it impossible to get seven pegs in comfort without fishing over mud banks

Summer League 2008

The Tenth and final round of the Summer Series was fished on the river Segura at Murcia town centre on the 19th June 2008.

The bottom of the river is still breaking up, but not to the extent that is did on our first visit to this venue in the summer series, this is the skin that forms on the bed of the river, some form of Algae I believe, and then when temperatures begin to rise this breaks up and floats to the surface.

Tony Medlicott weighed in with 18.430kgs taking first spot, second was Stan Roberts with 14.340kgs, Terry Screen was there again coming third with 9.580 0kgs, fourth with 9.100kgs was George Fogg.

On what turned out to be a very hot day, and with no pegs being occupied by none Carp R Us anglers before the whistle, all anglers had another good days sport.

Stuart Thompson was the angler on form using the pole and weighed in with 40.890kgs, second was Bob Elms with a very creditable 35.890kgs unfortunately breaking his new Rod in the process, George Fogg was there again coming third with 35.320kgs, fourth with 33.950kgs was Dennis Pick.

The Eighth Round of the Summer Series was fished at Argos on the 5th June 2008.

With no sign of the rain or winds that were forecast but what turned out to be a very humid day, and with only two pegs being occupied by none Carp R Us anglers before the whistle, a good day was had by all anglers.

Terry Screen was back on form weighing in with 42.720kgs, George Fogg (Can’t get a bite) was there again coming second with 41.330kgs, third with 40.780kgs was Stan Roberts and Fourth was Stuart Thompson with 37.850kgs.

In contrast to the past few weeks conditions were good with no sign of rain or the high winds we have been experiencing on the last run of matches at this venue.

The Fifth Round of the Summer Series was fished on the Segura at Murcia town centre on the 15th May 2008.

First came the winds then the rain and now the bottom of the river is breaking up, what this means is that a skin forms on the bed of the river and when temperatures begin to rise this breaks up and floats to the surface. The Dam wall does not allow this to escape and causes a build-up, making fishing almost impossible at times.

Stan Roberts overcame the problem on peg 1,fishing the pole and punch bread and was first with 12.600kg, 2nd was George Fogg fishing the waggler with corn with 11.380kg, 3rd was Nigel Maurant also fishing the waggler with 5.610kg and 4th was Dave Hutchinson fishing the pole with 5.240kg.

On the journey to the venue we were treated to on of the best electrical firework displays that Mother Nature could throw at us, but thankfully this had ceased before we actually started to fish although the heavy rains persisted throughout day, The fishing was good through out the match considering there had been a match the day before, The angler on form again was new man George Fogg

Fish were taken on the pole as well as the feeder method showing the fish are now feeding nearer the margins due to the rise in water temperature, bites were being taken from the start but around midday strong winds started to blow up, the wind direction changing frequently resulting in less bites.

26 anglers fished the match on what turned out to be a very hot day, all anglers weighed in, George Fogg and Bob Rafferty were the eventual overall winning pair with 75.950kgs followed very closely by Terry Screen and Ernie Critchely with 74.740kgs, third was Dave Hill and lady angler Ann Air with 59.590kgs. Top individual on the day was Terry Screen with 56.390kgs, second was George Fogg with 53.000kgs, third was Stuart Thompson with 40.320kgs and fourth was Dave Hill with 36.080kgs. Kevin Mortimer one of our members new to match fishing was putting fish into his keep net only to find at the weigh-in, that they had been swimming out through a hole at the bottom. Total weight of fish caught on the match was 552.600kgs
