Fly Fishing

Our Fly Fishing section is headed by Jim Cobb our game fishing Secretary, many outings have been arranged to  the Hondon venue which is an ideal location for the beginner to practice the skill of fly casting, Jim also arranges trips to Sierra De Elche where there is an opportunity to fish for trout on the River Segura, Jim is currently busy trying to locate further venues for trout fishing

Hondon Trucha

Carp R Us Hondon Trucha Fly Training Day

On 15th March 2006 CARP R US fishing club members visited Hondon Trucha to improve their fly fishing skills through practice and tuition. This venue is a well suited to fly fishing tuition as it is rectangular in shape with very few obstacles to impede casting practice. The day was fine and clear and practice went well with the added bonus of catching some trout later in the afternoon.
Most were returned as members on the day preferred catch and release. Ray Wenham did land two very fine rainbows of around two pounds each which were kept for the pot. Jan, owner of Hondon Trucha allows up to five trout to be kept. One incident occurred during practice when bringing in the fly line from front to back to store the energy in the fly rod before the final cast, the fly hook ended up in a members chin. This was deftly removed by Harold Barlow with a pair of pliers! The hook in question had a very small crushed barb so caused little damage.
Only barbless hooks are allowed at Hondon Trucha. This is crucial for catch and release. Everyone had a good day out and improved their fly fishing skills thanks to Jim Cobb who instructed. The club hopes to do more trips out to other places as they find them. Fly fishing techniques can be used to catch other fish as well both in the sea and the many inland lakes and rivers within our area.

On 19th April 2006 Carp R Us fly fishing club members revisited the Hondon Trucha (trout lake) to further our skills in the noble art of fly fishing! We had an early start at 08.30 in the morning.  The water was in better condition this time (slightly coloured). Generally we fished with floating lines and sinking leaders. Flies being used were small black and silver gold heads and some nymph buzzers with orange hackles. Everyone caught fish on the day right through the morning. Most practiced catch and release and undamaged fish were returned. Ray Wenham whose fly became a bedraggled unrecognized black mess of a fly through constant use still caught fish time after time. Bob Smith had some very nice trout towards lunchtime. Tuition was given by Harold Barlow and Bob Smith. The owner of Hondon tells me that he is going to introduce some Black Bass to the lake soon for the summer period. During the hot weather it is not possible to trout fish at the Hondon. We do hope to find other venues soon. We expect to fly fish for many other species at different venues as we find them....Jim Cobb Fly Fishing Section Carp R Us
